Why Work With Me?

Hi, I'm Sylvia, founder of Recreate Yorkshire and understand that you might want to get to know me a little better.

My Mission Statement.

"I'm a dedicated upcycler and educator with a passion for people and our planet. I take joy in fostering creativity with a foundation in sustainability and mindfulness. My little business offers a range of workshops that repurpose and recycle everyday household items with the aim of inspiring children, schools, groups, adults, and businesses, and demonstrating that creativity can develop important life skills and be a healing force for both individuals and the environment."

Sounds quite professional, doesn't it?!?!?! But what does it actually mean?

Who am I and why would you want to do a workshop with me?

The Real Me.

My favourite past-times are walking the dog in the Yorkshire countryside, a good book, snuggling up and watching films with my children, upcycling and rummaging around Charity Shops. I'm the perfect mix of science nerd and hopeless romantic.

I am a happy contradiction: quite bright but with the tendency to be a nincompoop, home body, introvert who loves going out and meeting new people them, complete over-organiser who is still happy to go with the flow, a maths and science geek with a thing for facts but also believes in whimsy and serendipity.

Growing Up.

As a child I had the chance to live in different areas of the country and was encouraged to scrabble in the dirt in the garden, welcome home anyone I wanted from school, dance, draw, create things from the recycling bin, taught to recycle, shop in charity shops and express myself by painting my bedroom whatever colour I wanted (I chose dirty yellow for the walls and brown gloss for the skirting boards). I consider myself lucky.

At a Business Bootcamp Course recently, I got the chance to think about what my core value were; either as an individual or as a business. I was instinctively drawn to, 'family', 'resourcefulness' and 'uniqueness'. I thought these were things I understood to be true about the way I lived my life and how I raised my boys but the more I analysed them the more I realised mu values were not new to me.........they were how I was raised, instilled in me from an early age. I consider myself very lucky.

Family is life. Not just immediate family, the local community, the global family.

Resourcefulness, as a skill or mindset, is key in every aspect of your day to day living; from cooking, to shopping, to work.

Uniqueness. Celebrate each and everyone's uniqueness.

I embed these values in my home and in each creative workshop.

Lovely, But What Skill and Experiences Do I Have?

I put myself through a Basic Sign Language certification when I was 17 years old, have a BA in Social Psychology, a DipHe Operating Department Practitioner (think Theatre Nurse), I've been a School Governor, a Sunday School Teacher, a Pre-School Assistant, I've experiment with and recycled domestic plastic into pieces of art since 2018, I've been a freelance ecofriendly creative workshop provider since 2018 and completed an Introduction to Art Therapy course.

So, Why Me?

I suppose what I'm trying to say is, when you work with me, you are getting hours of research into crafts, adapting them to be sustainable and resourcing the materials, years of networking and building relationships with communities and businesses and decades of dedicated people-passion, learning and understanding their needs.

In short; someone who genuinely loves to improve the physical and psychological wellbeing of children and adults alike.
